Overview

The Otter Trail in South Africa stretches along the country's rugged southern coastline. Locals consider this the best hiking in South Africa. This 5-day trek bursts with sea views, inviting swimming holes, and mystical forests. Sightings of cape clawless otters, dolphins, and whales are not uncommon. The self-catering huts along the Otter trail are located on scenic perches and are basic but comfortable. Although the daily distance and elevation gain is only moderately difficult, the rugged terrain, along with frequent ascents and descents, mean this trail is not to be underestimated. There is one short section that is exposed and secured with cables.

There are several river crossings on this trek, making this a rather wet adventure. The river crossings need to be timed with the tide, especially the final river crossing, which can be tricky even at low tide.

Due to its iconic status among South Africans, permits for this hike are coveted and are difficult to get. We must reserve permits a year in advance on specific dates. We are happy to check for availability on additional dates, but the likelihood of obtaining such permits is unlikely.

Combine the Otter Trail with the Coastal Trek for an epic 10-day loop.
