South Africa's Waterfall and Wildlife Wonderland Trek AT4-7

Accommodation

Accommodation is in simple huts that consist of bunk beds and mattresses. There are no blankets or pillows available like there are in the European huts, so it is necessary to bring a full sleeping bag.

Meals

It is necessary to bring all meals with you. At each hut, there is a refrigerator or cooler available, as well as a stove, pots and pans, and dishes to eat with. Each hut also has facilities to grill (“braai” as they call it in South Africa), with plenty of firewood available. There are “honesty shops” at each hut, and it’s possible to purchase snacks and beverages, including beer, along the way. You need the correct amount of cash and this is an honor system. With the Slackpacking option (luggage transfer), combined with the refrigerators and the cooking facilities, it is possible to prepare delicious and fresh meals throughout the tour.

The Waterfalls and Wildlife Wonderland Trek can be done year-round, but it is best done during the wet season (summer) when the waterfalls are in full force and the grasslands are a brilliant green. We recommend doing the trek between October and March.

If you are pairing the trek with a visit to nearby Kruger National Park, it is best to go game driving either in the dry season (May through September), or as early as possible in the wet season. It is possible to see much more wildlife when the grass is still low. The best time of year to combine the Waterfalls and Wildlife Wonderland Trek and game driving at Kruger National Park would be October, November, and December. At this time of year, there are also plenty of recently born wildlife wandering around, making it an extra special experience.
