Overview

The O-Trek in Torres del Paine National Park ignites all five senses as you treat yourself to the most iconic views in Patagonia. This trek is an extension of the shorter, and equally famous, W-Trek. In addition to those iconic views on the W-Trek, the O-Trek offers a journey through the less-explored corner of the park where more solitude awaits. Among the views are the famous towers at Mirador Torres, the expansive Glacier Grey from Passo John Gardner and Mirador Britanico. The juxtaposition of abrupt ridgelines, glittering glaciers and large lakes with stunning blue water plays with the imagination throughout. Unlike the W-Trek, the O-Trek requires two nights in a campsite, but the tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag are provided and waiting at each campsite.

Patagonia is a harsh environment, and its distance from the equator should not be underestimated. Extremely high winds and rapidly changing weather conditions should be expected.

-General hiking and navigation skills -Ability to read and interpret the weather forecast, as well as make an appropriate go/no-go decision -Ability to pack for extreme weather conditions, and to manage clothing layers in a way that keeps you dry and warmNote: The crux of the O-Trek is the crossing of John Gardner Pass. At 1.180 m. (3.871 ft.), this pass is often underestimated. But the extreme environment, strong winds and weather events make this pass a true challenge. On November 17th, 2025, a surprise and heavy snowstorm, accompanied by gale-force winds, led to whiteout conditions with no visibility and slippery trails. Five hikers died, and many others struggled back to the previous campsite, but were stranded for several days without adequate food or supplies. While this was a freak weather event that is unlikely to occur, it is important to know that such events can and do occur in extreme mountain environments, such as on the O-Trek. It is important to pack proper gear that will enable you to remain warm and dry during such weather events, to regularly check weather forecasts, and to be prepared to change plans, or even to turn around, in dangerous conditions.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation

It is not possible to do the entire O-Trek in huts. There are a couple of spots along the route, where huts don’t exist and it is necessary to stay in a tent. Tents are provided, along with the sleeping bag and sleeping pad. The huts along this route are very comfortable. They all provide beds and pillows, but at some huts it may be necessary to bring a full sleeping bag. Blankets are not always provided.

Private rooms are not available on this route.

Unfortunately, occassionally, accommodations are downgraded at the last minute from beds in the rifugios to tents. We are at the mercy of the organizations authorized to run within the national parks and do not have direct control over this. Should this happen, we will reduce the invoice accordingly.

Meals

Dinner and breakfast are served at each stop, with the exception of Campsite Perros, where there is a minimarket available. At some accommodations, it is served cafeteria style, and at others, it is served family style. Lunches are included in your package whenever possible.

Season and Timing

The best time to visit Torres del Paine is during the summer months, from October through March, but the O-Trek is generally only open from November to to March. December to February are the warmest months and are the most popular time to visit. These months are likely to have the safest conditions. Rainfall is the lowest in February.

It is important to remember how close Patagonia lies to the Antarctic region. Weather here is extreme, and it can be cold any time of year. The wind can be severe, and often carries the chill of the nearby glaciers. Snowstorms can occur at any time of year, but are most likely in November and March, and least likely in the middle of the trekking season. We strongly recommend you consider your experience and capability to handle extreme conditions when choosing your timing for this route.
